Program Overview

The Bachelor of Optometry (Honours) programme prepares students for a career in primary eye and vision care through a strong foundation in vision science, ocular health and clinical optometric practice. Students develop the knowledge and

professional skills needed to assess visual function and eye health, support the management of appropriate conditions, and provide patient-centred care within a multidisciplinary healthcare environment.

Graduates may pursue opportunities in private practice, optical retail, healthcare settings, community eye-care services and the ophthalmic industry. Upon successful completion of the programme, Malaysian graduates may apply to register with the Malaysian Optical Council, subject to applicable requirements.

This programme received a 100% graduate employability score in the Ministry of Higher

At UCSI, students learn through a progressive blend of classroom study, simulated practice and supervised clinical experience. They begin by developing essential optometric skills in a simulated environment, including case history taking, eye examinations, diagnostic techniques and communication with patients. They then build confidence through clinical sessions with real patients under the guidance of qualified optometrists and experienced lecturers.

The programme also develops the wider professional competencies required in contemporary optometric practice. In their later years, students explore practice management, healthcare law and policy, ethics, economics, and the delivery of care for patients across different age groups and visual-health needs. Community service experiences further expose students to the eye-care needs of diverse populations, including children, older adults and underserved communities.

This combination of clinical exposure, professional development and community engagement prepares graduates to provide responsible, evidence-based primary eye and vision care.
